EMTI is a subscription business designed to give people control of their possessions. Based on the Buddhist principle of “emptiness,” the product allows people to slowly get rid of objects, fears, memories, and relationships that are unnecessary, and sometimes toxic. Every month, a customer receives an empty box of a particular shape and size with return postage included. The box contains a message taken from ancient philosophical wisdom about the power of letting go of painful objects and memories. The user puts whatever they wish into the box, and posts the box back to EMTI. EMTI then takes responsibility for disposing of the object in the most thoughtful, sustainable way possible. Plastics are recycled, clothes are upcycled or mended, books are donated to appropriate libraries. In the case of painful memories, EMTI conducts appropriate rituals to bury the past and allow the user to be free of whatever is holding them back.
